On 19 June 2024, ASEAN-China Future Relations Forum convened successfully in Jakarta, Indonesia.
H.E. Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister of China and H.E. Saleumxay Kommasith, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Lao PDR sent congratulatory messages to the Forum. H.E. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN delivered a keynote speech. H.E. Sun Weidong, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of China and H.E. Aung Kyaw Moe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar, the Country Coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, delivered video speeches.
The theme of the Forum is “Towards a More Substantive Comprehensive Strategic Partnership”. There three plenary sessions, namely “Upholding Regionalism” “Science, Technology and Artificial Intelligence” and “Building Heart-to-Heart Bridges” were moderated respectively by Dr. Dino Patti Djalal, Founder and Chairman of Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia, Ms. Zurina Moktar, Assistant Director of Science and Technology Division of the ASEAN Secretariat, and Mr. Wang Guan, Host of CGTN. H.E. Hassan Wirajuda, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, H.E. Pehin Dato Lim Jock Seng, former Minister II of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Brunei Darussalam, H.E. Un Kheang, Secretary of State of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, Prof. Yang Jiemian, Chairman of Academy Affairs Council of Shanghai Institute for International Studies and other government officials, distinguished scholars and youth representatives from China and ASEAN countries had an intensive discussion about ASEAN-China future relations.
Participants of the Forum spoke highly of ASEAN-China relationship and were in the view that China is ASEAN's most important dialogue partner. The rapid advancement of ASEAN-China comprehensive strategic partnership has made tangible contributions to regional peace, stability and development. Looking ahead, China and ASEAN should further enhance strategic mutual trust, strengthen cooperation in the fields including trade and investment, connectivity, green transformation, cyber security, and combating transnational crime. Both sides should uphold true multilateralism and open regionalism, jointly address global and regional challenges, and strengthen cooperation in science, technology and innovation and artificial intelligence governance, so as to close the digital divide and enjoy new opportunities for development brought by the digital economy. To foster a closer bond between the peoples and consolidate the social foundation of bilateral relations, the two sides should step up cooperation on social, cultural, youth, education, and media exchanges, etc.
The Forum was co-hosted by the Mission of China to ASEAN and the Permanent Mission of Myanmar to ASEAN, and supported by the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia, the ASEAN Secretariat and the Center for International Security and Strategy of Tsinghua University. Nearly 200 people from China and ASEAN countries, including members of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN, representatives from missions of ASEAN dialogue partners, recipients of the ASEAN-China Young Leaders Scholarship, attended the Forum.
