Wang Yi Meets with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi

On July 12, 2023 local time, Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in Jakarta.

Wang Yi said that this year marks the beginning of jointly building a community with a shared future between China and Indonesia, and also the 10th anniversary of the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. Bilateral relations have shown broad prospects for development. President Xi Jinping and President Joko Widodo have established high-degree mutual trust and friendship, providing strategic guidance for the development of bilateral relations. China is ready to work with Indonesia to prepare for high-level exchanges in the next stage, advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, and foster more new cooperation highlights in green development, digital economy, food security, and poverty reduction and alleviation, among others.

Wang Yi said that the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway is a major landmark project of the Belt and Road Initiative, carrying the Indonesian people's aspirations for a better life, and even being a successful example of Asian countries' joint efforts to move toward modernization. Wang Yi expressed the belief that with the joint efforts of the two sides, the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway will be completed and opened to traffic as scheduled and play its due role in Indonesia's economic and social development.

Wang Yi said that this year marks the 20th anniversary of China's being the first to join the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia. China will continue to support an effective ASEAN-centered regional cooperation architecture, and support ASEAN in strengthening community-building and playing a greater role in international and regional affairs. He expressed the belief that Indonesia, as the ASEAN chairmanship, will make new contributions to the success of this series of foreign ministers' meetings and provide new impetus to the development of China-ASEAN relations. China and ASEAN will jointly inject more stability and certainty into a world with changes and turmoils.

Retno Marsudi said that China is an important strategic cooperative partner of Indonesia. Indonesia attaches great importance to its relations with China, and is full of expectations for high-level exchanges between the two sides in the next stage. She thanked China for its support for Indonesia's hosting of multilateral events and the importance it attaches to ASEAN. Indonesia will play its role as chairmanship to deepen ASEAN-China cooperation.

The two sides also had an exchange of views on international and regional issues of mutual interest and concern.
